A library in New York was recently treated to an unexpected delivery from Virginia, and inside the package was a remarkable surprise: an overdue book that had been checked out in 1933.
The Larchmont Public Library revealed that the book, titled "Youth and Two Other Stories" by Joseph Conrad, arrived via mail, sent by Joanie Morgan. Morgan came across the book among her step-father's possessions.
Remarkably, the book had been due for return on October 11, 1933, making it nearly 90 years overdue when it finally found its way back to the library.
Library officials noted that, theoretically, the book could have incurred fines exceeding $6,400 based on the 20-cents-per-day rate, but the library's policy caps fines at $5.
The library humorously mentioned on its website, "No matter how long a Larchmont Public Library book is overdue, if it gets returned, the maximum fine is a whopping five bucks."
